The recent peace summit on Ukraine, held in Switzerland, highlighted the complex geopolitical dynamics and divergences of interests that mark the international scenario, particularly when considering the positioning of countries in the Global South. The failure of this summit to reach a consensus reflects not only the difficulties in finding a solution to the conflict, but also the multiplicity of interests that these countries have at stake, which goes beyond simple cooperation with Ukraine and extends to a broader international order.

The summit brought together representatives from different nations, including emerging powers like China, Brazil, India and Saudi Arabia. These countries, although united under the banner of the Global South, do not necessarily share the same view on the conflict in Ukraine or on solutions to resolve it. Everyone has their own priorities and interests, that are shaped by economic considerations, strategic and political.

A China, for example, adopts a cautious and balanced stance, seeking to maintain good relations with Russia, your strategic ally, while presenting herself as a defender of international peace and stability. During the summit, China avoided supporting any resolution that could be seen as a direct condemnation of Russia, preferring to emphasize the importance of dialogue and respect for the sovereignty of States. This positioning reflects China's broader strategy of promoting a multipolar order, where its influence can grow without directly confronting the great Western powers.

Brazil, in its turn, seeks an international mediator role, consistent with its diplomatic tradition of neutrality and peaceful resolution of conflicts. However, Brazil also faces internal and regional challenges that influence its stance. During the summit, the Brazilian government emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and inclusive negotiations, but without explicitly aligning itself with any of the parties involved in the conflict. This position reflects Brazil's desire to be seen as a responsible global actor, able to dialogue with all parties, but it also reveals his caution in not alienating great powers such as the United States and the European Union, who have been steadfast in their support for Ukraine.

The India, on the other hand, has a complex relationship with Russia, dating back to the times of the Cold War. India's dependence on Russian weapons and cooperation in several strategic sectors means that India adopts a more neutral stance towards the conflict in Ukraine. During the summit, India highlighted the importance of a United Nations-led peace process and underlined the need to consider the security concerns of all parties involved. This position reflects India's ambition to be a leader in the Global South, without compromising its strategic relations with Moscow.

Saudi Arabia, in its turn, has interests that go beyond the conflict itself. The Saudi kingdom is deeply involved in regional and global dynamics that influence its stance. At the summit, Saudi Arabia focused on solutions that promote stability, a priority for a country facing internal and regional challenges, including the conflict in Yemen and tensions with Iran. Besides that, Saudi Arabia is interested in maintaining good relations with all major powers, which leads her to adopt a moderate position regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

The involvement of countries from the Global South in the peace summit on Ukraine should not be seen merely as an attempt to mediate the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, but as part of a broader effort to redefine its role in the international order. These countries, representing a significant part of the population and the global economy, are increasingly assertive in defending their interests and seeking greater influence on global decisions. However, their different priorities and internal challenges make it difficult to form a unified position, which contributed to the failure of the summit to achieve concrete results.

The failure of the Swiss peace summit highlights the difficulties in aligning the divergent interests of countries in the Global South in relation to the conflict in Ukraine. China, Brazil, India and Saudi Arabia, each with their own priorities and alliances, reflect the complexity of reaching consensus in an international scenario marked by deep geopolitical divisions. The summit revealed that, as these countries seek greater global influence, Their internal differences and the need to balance relations with the great powers will continue to challenge their efforts to shape a new international order.
