Outbreaks of separatist movements in Scotland

By Pedro Gerhardt CorrĂȘa and Priscilla Cesarino Taddone

The UK's exit from the European Union, with the Brexit movement, culminated in greater fervor on the part of Scots to leave the Union in the future.. although in 2014 a referendum was held in which Scotland took a stand against the withdrawal of the United Kingdom, after Brexit, the country questioned the decision to remain in the Union. Since its incorporation in the UK, Scotland is known to have been cultivating separatist ideals and feelings regarding its permanence in the political union.. this happens, so much for historical facts, and for reasons of social and political interests.

Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon, which has openly separatist intentions, demonstrated support for the referendum that could enable Scotland's withdrawal from the UK, as well as a possible return of the country to the EU. In favor of separatist movement actions, Nicola joined the Scottish Green Party, with the intention of strengthening the feeling of independence in the country. However,, it is worth noting that, although the agreement between the SNP is consolidated. (Nicola Sturgeon party) and the Scottish Green Party, the population does not feel confident that such a union will bring positive effects to the country.

An intention poll conducted by the Scottish newspaper “The Scotsman” in September 2021 pointed out that, excluding uncertain voters on the topic, 52 per cent of Scots support a referendum to decide the fate of the country, and that this could occur in about two years. Already according to Scottish voters, near 20% Those representing the Scottish Workers' Party support the holding of a new referendum in favor of Scotland's disengagement movement from the United Kingdom.

In conclusion, it can be inferred that, in an economic scenario, Scottish independence could bring benefits to the country.. Scottish subordination to the UK Monarchy, several times, ended up inhibiting decisions of most of the country's population, as in the case of the referendum in favor of Brexit. Just wondering if there is a possibility that Scotland will join the EU again, and consequently, act within the bloc as an independent country. Another reason that validates the decision to separate Scottish territory from the United Kingdom would be the greater freedom it will gain in political affairs..
