Italy and Vatican on COP26 (Pre-COP 26)

In the days 30 from september to 02 of October, the Pre-COP took place in Milan 26, meeting that preceded the COP 26, UN climate conference, in progress between days 1 e 15 november of 2021 in the city of glasgow.

With the beginning of the COP 26 at the beginning of november, ministers from different countries gathered in Italy for Pre-COP26 to discuss how to resolve some important issues and prepare them for the meeting. Thus, Pre-COP was jointly organized by the governments of Italy and the United Kingdom, which will host the next COP, with the aim of establishing the means to achieve positive results in Glasgow, place where it will be held. It was also presented, an appeal (Joint Appeal) idealized by the Vatican leader, which aims to encourage political and religious leaders – holders of great influence in promoting climate awareness among high positions of power – to commit to the goals of net zero carbon emissions and limits the increase in global temperatures to 1.5ÂșC. Like this, providing significant support for environmental discussions at the Conference.

A Pre-COP 26 started at the end of September, where Pope Francis, who also gave a speech at Youth4Climate, welcomed participants at the Paul VI Hall in the Vatican, in order to encourage them to work for future generations. The religious and political leader also highlighted his satisfaction with working side by side with the governments of Italy and the United Kingdom in relation to the impacts of messages coming from other leaders.

During the meeting, the Italian climate minister, Roberto Cingolani, spoke out criticizing those who seek renewable energy without wanting to have it in their “quintal”. Cingolani continued his speech agreeing with the seriousness of the problem raised by activist Greta Thunberg in her speech at Youth4Climate, in which he ridiculed political leaders for only promising and not acting on the climate emergency. The Italian minister highlighted that, since these problems were not credible in the past, and states are not doing enough, The objective of the convention is to progress in this direction, and that for this, there must be change.
