Dodik's attempt to create a Serbian army of his own brings issues of the Balkans past to light

Po: Gustavo Cunha, Matheus Colucci and Victor Ilic

in the last week of september (27), one of the leaders of the presidency of Bosnia, of Serbian origin, Milorad Dodik, said he would form his own army. “Let's withdraw our agreement on the joint Bosnian army […] let's propose, for decision making in the coming days […], the formation of the army of the Srpska Republic”. Given the above, it is to be expected that tension will grow among the other members of the country's leadership, composed of a Croatian and a Muslim Bosnian.

It is noteworthy that Bosnia was the scene of great stability after the end of the USSR and the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The Balkan region, that concentrated different ethnicities, suffered from the Bosnian War, which ended with the Dayton Peace Agreement, responsible for dividing the country into a Croatian-Bosnian and a Serbian entity, united by a central government. Like this, the executive branch in Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently established by three persons., so that all three nationalities of the peoples that make up the country feel represented. Therefore, besides Dodik, there is also Sefik Dzaferovic, of Bosnian origin and Zeljko Komsic, a center left Croatian, as chief executives and commanders of the common armed forces, established in 2006 and considered essential for the preservation of the current stability and integrity of the region..

Therefore, it is clear why the other leaders were not happy, after all, given the cultural differences and political division, is a cause for concern when one of the chief executives claims to create an army of his own, which can cause great instability in the nation, and that according to Komsic's words, "is a criminal act of rebellion".

E, to add to Dodik's phrase, It is noteworthy that Serbian politicians boycotted their legal activities in July due to the introduction of a law suggested by the UN, which would characterize as a crime those who demonstrate against, or consider non-existent, the genocide in Bosnia. This fact corroborated to a disagreement among the population in the middle of this year of 2021.

Boycotts and Dodik's decision to create an army of his own, go against the declaration of this, after taking office in 2018, when I said I would ask the European Union (EU) the granting of candidate country status to enter the bloc. These current measures by the Serbian government could be major impasses for the negotiation of the country's membership in the bloc, leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina in an unfavorable position vis-Ă -vis other Balkan countries that are also seeking membership.

Therefore, it is visible that the country, even after many years of the end of conflicts after the breakup of Yugoslavia, it still has internal tensions between the different nationalities that live there.. Besides that, the current government system, in which there are Serbian representatives, Bosnians and Croats, proves worn out, as leaders are constantly misaligned on many issues., like the very massacre of the Bosnians that took place between the years of 1992 e 1995. In addition, these internal problems could make it difficult for Bosnia to enter the EU, an old country wish.
