Presidential elections in France

Article written by Giovana Migliari and Giovanna Varonez

The first round of the French presidential election took place on the 10 April 2022, with five candidates vying for the country's presidential office, being them: Emmanuel Macron, Marine Le Pen, Jean-Luc Melenchon, Eric Zemmour and Valerie Precresse. Macron and Le Pen lead in Ifop's vote intention poll.

The two favorite candidates faced each other in the second round, what happened day 24 of April. Emmanuel Macron was running to be re-elected as President of France by the Republic in March, party founded by himself. Polls indicated Macron would win the election., according to research carried out by the Ifop Institute, with little more than 3% of Le Pen difference.

During his first term, Macron faced problems with opponents, who several times protested in the streets against some measure implemented by him, as happened with the “yellow vests” who protested against the increase in the price of diesel. No year of 2022, still, Macron avoided arguments with opponents. Proposals for reelection are: increase retirement to 65 years, carry out reforms in the labor market and unemployment insurance, relaunch nuclear reactors and invest in wind energy.  In contrast, Le Pen was a parliamentarian representing the French extreme right, running in a party known for its nationalist and anti-immigration stance. In 2017, Le Pen even ran for the presidential chair., losing to Macron in the second round by a considerable margin.

Regarding your proposals, although he worked on smoothing the speech of emblematic topics, like euroscepticism (current based on mistrust of the European Union), she maintained conservative stances. One of its main proposals for 2022 was immigration control in France, in addition to proposing rules such as the withdrawal of residence permits for foreigners who have not worked at least one year in the country and priority in housing and employment matters for nationals. Eradication of ideology throughout French territory, tax cuts, retirement reform and relaunch of the nuclear sector and targets that involve the cost of living in the country are other proposals made by the candidate.
